- AISHE Report 2019 20|In The Last Five Years, The Number Of Girls In Higher Education Increased, The Interest Of Students In Engineering Decreased

The Ministry of Education has released the All India Survey of Higher Education (AISHE) report 2019-20. According to the released report, now the number of girls in higher education is increasing. For the first time, the number of boys and girls in admission to undergraduate courses in the country was almost equal.
It was told in the report that till the last five years, 90 girls were taking admission in B.Com for 100 boys, but in 2019-20 this figure increased to 100. In 2019-20, 41.6 lakh students took admission in B.Com, out of which 20.3 lakh were girls while 21.3 lakh were boys.
Enrollment of girls increased manifold in 5 years
In the last five years, B.Com was the only stream where the number of girls was less. This gender gap in B.Sc and MBBS was almost closed from the year 2017-18 itself. In 2017-18, there were 100 girls for every hundred students in B.Sc, while 101 girls took admission in undergraduate medicine for every 100 boys. In just two years, in B.Sc, 113 girls per hundred boys and 110 girls per hundred MBBS students.
Overall, in all the courses, where there used to be 86 girls per hundred students in 2015-2016, it has now become 96 girls per hundred boys in 2019-20.
Students’ interest in engineering decreased
According to the released report, there were a total of 3.85 crore admissions in higher education in the year 2019-20 while the total enrollment in 2018-19 was 3.74 crore. That is, in one year these figures increased by 3.04 percent. Out of 3.85 crore students, 79.5 percent i.e. 3.06 crore students took admission in undergraduate courses. At the same time, 43.1 lakh students enrolled for master’s degree while 2.02 lakh students appeared for PhD.
According to the report, there was an increase in the admission of students in all fields other than engineering. This year 1.25 lakh students took less admission in engineering as compared to last year. Last year, 38.5 lakh students had enrolled in engineering, while this year the number has come down to 37.2 lakh.
Increase in the number of institutions of national importance
According to the AISHE Report 2019-20, the number of Institutions of National Importance (INIs) has increased by 80 per cent in the last five years. In the year 2015, the number of INIs was only 75, which increased to 135 in 2020. Not only this, it has been found in the report that in the last five years, the number of PhD candidates has also increased by 60 percent.
