One third of children and adolescent girls in the country are iron deficient. This has come to the fore in a survey by the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad. 33 thousand children from across the country were included in the survey. The most surprising thing about the survey is that cases of anemia were seen more in children from rural and poor families, while they had better iron levels. However, this was not seen in urban children.
Other nutrients are also necessary for hemoglobin
Dr. Bharti Kulkarni, Senior Scientist of the National Institute of Nutrition, says that it is necessary to have sufficient amount of hemoglobin in the body. This is possible only with the food and its quality. For this, apart from iron, it is necessary to have many nutrients in the diet.
If there is a decrease in hemoglobin, then the risk of infection
Dr. Bharti says, the major reason for the lack of hemoglobin in the body of children from poor sections is the lack of nutrients in the diet. Cases of infection increase in people living in such places, as a result the body’s ability to absorb iron and the process of making hemoglobin slows down.
Hemoglobin test detects anemia
Dr. Hemlata R, director of the National Institute of Nutrition, says, during the survey, the level of hemoglobin in the blood is usually checked. Iron deficiency is detected by this. Iron supplements or medicines are given in such people when the cases of anemia increase.
What changes happen in the body due to iron deficiency
1. Frequent fatigue
cause: Due to deficiency of iron, the level of hemoglobin in the body falls. This hemoglobin is responsible for carrying oxygen in the body. Due to this, oxygen is not able to circulate in the body and fatigue remains.
2. Yellowing of the skin
cause: Due to the lack of hemoglobin in the RBCs present in the blood, the color of the blood becomes lighter. This is the light blood circulation in the patient’s body, so instead of redness on the skin, yellowness starts appearing. Seek medical advice if you see such symptoms.
3. Shortness of breath
cause: Decreased hemoglobin leads to lack of oxygen in the body. This is the reason why it becomes difficult to breathe while walking. When this happens, the body tries to draw more oxygen from outside and the person is seen gasping.
4. Headache and fainting
cause: Its cases are mostly seen in women. The exact reason for this has not been revealed yet, but scientists believe that due to lack of oxygen in the blood, there may be complaints of headache and dizziness.
5. Dryness of skin and hair
Reason: The reason for dryness in the skin and hair has also been told due to lack of oxygen in the body. Lack of hemoglobin in the body affects the growth of skin and hair cells. Dryness is seen in them.
