Later this week or early next week, India’s selectors will select the squad for the Asia Cup. During this, the selectors will sit together for the last time before the T20 World Cup to be held in Australia in October.
After the Asia Cup in September, the Indian team has home T20 series against Australia and South Africa. However, there is a possibility that the ICC will have to be informed by selecting the World Cup squad before those matches.
Selectors can go with any one of the two options
India can take a two-way approach to the Asia Cup: pick your best team, or use the tournament to assess World Cup options. According to what is visible at the moment, 12 out of 15 places are seen to be filled.
On the batting front, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik. Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja should be the two all-rounders. Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel are seen at the forefront of the race to be part of the team as fast bowlers. Along with them, Yuzvendra Chahal is also almost certain to be taken as a wrist spinner.
Jasprit Bumrah will lead the Indian fast bowling attack in the T20 World Cup.
Top-12 can get opportunity together
Giving priority to these 12 players, whether India gives the experience of playing together in the big tournament before the T20 World Cup or gives a chance to other contenders, it will be a matter to be seen. After the player is decided for 12 spots, the point to be noted is how the claim for the remaining 3 places will be decided. The fact is that the future of many players is at stake in these 3 vacant places.
Tough competition for selection in Deepak Chahar and Bhubaneshwar
Not so long ago, Deepak Chahar could have been India’s favorite option as a powerplay wicket-taker, but Bhuvneshwar regained his old rhythm amid his injury. Chahar’s ability to hit sixes, however, still makes him a contender for the T20 World Cup team, especially if Jadeja does not go, Deepak will be present as a backup.
Team India’s power play wicket taker Deepak Chahar could not play a single match of IPL 2022 due to injury.
While Hardik and Jadeja will be India’s first choices as all-rounders, Jadeja’s strike rate with both bat and ball has been a matter of concern for the team this year. So if Jadeja’s batting doesn’t do well, India can look for a more aggressive spin option. In such a situation, Chahar can lengthen the batting order. India would definitely like to see how Deepak Chahar performs in the pressured conditions of the Asia Cup.
R. Ashwin’s spin makes him a big contender for the team
In 2022, Ashwin has a better batting strike rate than Jadeja in T20s, but the reason for Ashwin’s re-emergence in this format is not the batting. The main reason for Ashwin’s claim is his offspin, towards which all the teams around the world have turned. A bowler who has the ability to complete the quota of 4 overs in every match and also create opportunities to get wickets.
He might lose some matches, but he has the potential to come back. Ashwin has a good chance of playing against teams with multiple left-handers, especially if India can find Jadeja’s runs elsewhere. However, if they are up against a heavy right-arm line-up, Chahal and Jadeja will probably play as first-choice spinners. It is hard to imagine a situation in which India plays with three spinners.
Axar Patel can be taken as Jadeja’s backup
Akshar is the only kind of back-up for Jadeja. The shorter the format gets, the bigger the threat to Jadeja’s place. However, it is unlikely that India will pick a player who is a back-up in that exact role and not much else.
Akshar had recently won Team India a nearly lost match due to his batting.
In the end, it will happen that either Jadeja or Axar are going to be in the playing-11. So if Akshar makes it to the squad for the Asia Cup, it would mean that he is still a threat to Jadeja’s place.
Deepak Hooda may be among 15 players
Hooda took advantage of every opportunity that came in 2022. He has proved his usefulness with the ball as well. The question is whether he needs to bowl an over or two against the left-handers. However, it is likely that out of the 12 fixed players mentioned earlier, one batsman will already be on the bench. Despite this, there could be a place for Hooda as the second batting back-up in the squad of 15.
Arshdeep Singh’s left arm death bowling can be useful
Arshdeep’s USP is his ability to bowl yorkers in the death overs. Apart from this, it also goes in his favor that he is the only left-handed pacer in the race for team selection. If India takes only one fast bowling back-up, it could be Arshdeep vs Chahar. In such a situation, Arshdeep’s defeat is certain in front of Deepak Chahar’s batting ability. This is also because India already have two bowlers in the form of Bumrah and Chahal, from whom much is not expected on the batting front.
Selectors can bet on either Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi
Both the wrist spinners have been around in India’s T20I set-up for the past few months. However, India’s recent selections suggest that they will not have two wrist spinners in the same playing-11. It is also visible that no player is being included in the team as a back-up for Chahal.
Kuldeep Yadav took 21 wickets in 14 matches of IPL 2022.
However, don’t be surprised if either Kuldeep and Bishnoi make it to the Asia Cup. The Indian team can try these two for one last time before the World Cup team selection.
